Hearing Aid Repair Services

Hearing aids require regular maintenance,  such as adjustments, cleanings, and more thorough repairs. If your hearing aids need repair, contact our nearest Helix Hearing Care clinic for help.

Expert Cleaning and Repairs

Occasionally, your hearing aids will stop working as well as they should. This could be due to something as simple as parts being blocked by earwax, and a simple cleaning can make them good as new. You may also find that your hearing aids need to be retuned and readjusted to suit your up to date hearing needs. Sometimes your hearing aids may have sustained more serious damage, and they need to be repaired.

If the repairs are simple, such as cleanings and adjustments, our hearing health care professionals can easily perform the repairs at our clinic. Most of the time a thorough clean and check of your hearing aids resolves hearing aid issues. Sometimes hearing aids need small repairs such as:

  • Changing tubes
  • Changing wax guards
  • Cleaning the receivers
  • Adjusting the sound settings

We repair and clean hearing aids of all makes to keep them working to their full potential. The small repairs can be done at the clinic while you wait. If the damage is more severe, the hearing aids are sent to the manufacturers for repair. Most hearing aid manufacturers in Canada are located in Ontario. It may take between five to ten business days to receive your hearing aids back from repair. These repairs may be covered by your hearing aid warranty package.

If your hearing aid is not under warranty it may still be repaired by the manufacturer as long as it is not more than 5 years old. Since the hearing aids are made of small electronic pieces we do not recommend that you try to repair your hearing aids yourself. You will likely cause more damage to the hearing aids and it may void your "Loss & Damage" or insurance coverage. Our hearing care professionals will give you a call when your hearing aids are ready to be picked up at the clinic.

Hearing Aid Loss and Damage Warranty

All hearing manufacturers include a minimum of 2 year Loss and Damage Warranty on a new hearing aid purchase. You can also purchase extended warranties and protection coverage from clinics like ours.

If you have questions about what is covered under the Loss and Damage Warranty you can contact one of our local hearing care clinics at any time. We would be happy to answer any questions you have.

How much does it cost to have my hearing aids repaired?

The cost to fix a broken or damaged hearing aid varies based on a few things:

  • Whether the hearing aid is still under warranty
  • How damaged the device is
  • The cost of replacement parts for your unit

Our hearing care professionals will let you know if there are any costs involved to repair your hearing aids, and how much it would be.

Do you offer loaner hearing aids while mine are being repaired?

In some cases, our Helix Hearing Care clinics can provide loaner devices so clients don’t go without while their hearing aids are out for repair.

What is considered beyond repair?

If you have an older hearing aid (more than five years), they may be beyond repair depending on the extent of the damage.

If there is external damage to the hearing aid, such as if they were stepped on, and the electronic components cannot be salvaged they may also be beyond repair.

What are the most common ways that hearing aids become damaged?

You may be wondering what are the most common ways hearing aids can go missing or be damaged. They include:

  • Pets or small children playing with them
  • Falling out when removing tight clothing or when removing a face mask
  • Being pulled out and stepped on when working in tight spaces

  • Being attached to or inside the pockets of clothes going through laundry machines

You should always be careful when handling your hearing aids. It is recommended to take them out in the same spot and keep them in a place where children and pets can’t reach them. If you do drop them accidentally, make sure you are careful where you step so you do not accidentally crush them under your foot.

Hearing Aid Tuning and Adjustments

New hearing aids may need adjustments or extra tuning done when you start to wear the new hearing aids. It is good to remain patient, as it can take time to adapt to wearing hearing aids — your brain will be going through a process of adaptation as it learns to focus and filter sounds that come from the hearing aids. Don’t be afraid to speak up if something needs to be changed! It is a team effort to make sure your hearing aids work as well as they can to help you.

Here are some signs that you might need to come in to make adjustments to your hearing aids:

  • Declining speech clarity
  • Whistling sounds in your ear
  • Volume fluctuations
  • Additional hearing loss
  • Pain or discomfort in or around your ear

You may also find that, over time, your hearing goes through slight changes. This can lead to your hearing aids not helping as much as they once did. This is why we recommend our clients return for a periodic hearing checkup.

Telehearing Care Services

Some of the newest hearing aid models can be equipped with an accessory that allows you to have your tuning and adjustment appointments done remotely. That means you can sit at home, at a café, or while you are traveling as your Helix Hearing Care clinician tunes your hearing aid from our clinic.

For our Telehearing Care services, all you need is a reliable internet connection and a smartphone. Some hearing aids will also require an additional programming device. Your hearing care professional will let you know exactly what pieces of technology are required.

These remote appointments are suitable for people who cannot easily visit their local clinic, either due to travel, weather, or mobility concerns. It is also good for people who want to avoid in-person visits due to the COVID-19 pandemic, as long as the service you want can be done remotely.

Some appointments, such as hearing tests, will still need to be done in person. But as long as the appointment can be done remotely and over the phone, we will offer that to you as an option for your convenience and safety.

Hearing Aid Troubleshooting Tips

Some hearing aid issues are simple enough that they can be fixed at home by yourself or a loved one, as long as you know what to do. You can call your local Helix Hearing Care clinic for help, but before you do so you can also try these troubleshooting tips:

  • Check the battery: Make sure the battery was inserted into the battery compartment properly. The positive shiny side should be facing upwards.
  • Change the wax system: Change the wax filter on your hearing aids. This will unclog earwax, dirt or debris that may be clogging up the microphone or ports.
  • Clean the hearing aid: Use the brush and wax loop to gently swipe away any dirt, wax or debris near the ports and vents.
  • Inspect silicone domes: Replace disposable silicone domes every two to four weeks.
  • Inspect the tubing for BTE (behind-the-ear) models: Change the tubing every three to six months. Call the clinic if you notice any debris or moisture clogging the tubing.
